The Royal Order of 25th September 1833 established that it was mandatory for each provincial capital to have a provincial health board, which was obliged to ensure compliance with the health measures in the territory, to supervise public health and to take any necessary precautions to prevent contagious diseases. On 15th July 1834, the Higher Health Board was implemented in the province of Girona, only to be dissolved in 1868 as a result of the regulations of the new health policy.
